IT CHANGES EVERYTHING
Commissioned by 1842 Magazine, The Economist
Breast cancer affecting younger and younger women is a difficult subject—one I had to approach with both care and subtlety. The editorial needed immediacy, so the images had to signal the story clearly, but tastefully. I started with female forms, then layered in ferns—rounded, growing, beautiful, but fragile and sickly—echoing the creeping, unpredictable nature of disease.
I tried several sets of images before landing here, seeking a balance between clarity and nuance. The result feels moody and open, able to stand on its own without the article, and resonates differently depending on how it’s seen. It was one of my more challenging pieces, not just technically but personally; as a woman, this is a reality that touches all of us in some way.
Le cancer du sein touchant des femmes de plus en plus jeunes est un sujet difficile, que j’ai abordé avec soin et subtilité. L’éditorial demandait une lecture immédiate : les images devaient raconter l’histoire clairement, tout en restant élégantes. J’ai commencé par des formes féminines, puis ajouté des fougères — arrondies, en croissance, belles mais fragiles et maladives — reflétant la nature rampante et imprévisible de la maladie.
J’ai testé plusieurs séries d’images avant de trouver celle-ci, cherchant un équilibre entre clarté et nuance. Le résultat est à la fois sombre et ouvert, capable de tenir seul sans l’article, et de résonner différemment selon la manière dont on le regarde. C’est l’un de mes projets les plus exigeants, techniquement et personnellement ; en tant que femme, c’est une réalité qui nous touche toutes d’une façon ou d’une autre.
