ONDERWEG IN EEN KLEINE WERELD

I took the train from Berlin to Moscow and back, and from Singapore to Bangkok, and I hope to take many more trips in the future. I’ve always loved train travel—it’s slow, it gives you time to think, time to watch the world go by, time to talk to strangers or just sit in that in-between state where you’re gone but not yet arrived. I wanted this series for Flow magazine to capture that feeling, and I built it entirely from vintage images, keeping the elements bold and minimal.
There’s something about trains that feels a little lost these days—the cocoon of being offline, unavailable, unreachable—that you used to get on long journeys. I tried to capture a bit of that magic, the small poetry of motion, the nostalgia and whimsy of being somewhere between places, with time enough to notice things you’d never see rushing past in a car or on a plane.
J’ai pris le train de Berlin à Moscou et retour, et de Singapour à Bangkok, et j’espère faire encore beaucoup d’autres voyages à l’avenir. J’ai toujours aimé voyager en train — c’est lent, ça te donne du temps pour réfléchir, pour regarder le monde défiler, pour parler à des inconnus ou juste rester dans cet état intermédiaire où tu es parti mais pas encore arrivé. Pour cette série pour Flow magazine, je voulais capturer ce sentiment, et je l’ai construite entièrement à partir d’images anciennes, avec des éléments très graphiques et minimalistes.
Il y a quelque chose qui se perd un peu aujourd’hui avec les trains — ce cocon d’être hors ligne, indisponible, injoignable — que l’on retrouvait sur les longs trajets. J’ai essayé de capturer un peu de cette magie, la petite poésie du mouvement, la nostalgie et la fantaisie d’être quelque part entre deux lieux, avec le temps de remarquer des choses qu’on ne verrait jamais en courant dans une voiture ou dans un avion.
